LPA
Lasting Power of Attorney
Who would look after your affairs if you were unable to do so yourself?
A Lasting Power of Attorney gives you the right to appoint people you trust to look after your interests in the event of you being unable to do so yourself. While this can of course mean through loss of mental capacity in later life it can also mean as a result of accident or illness at any time and should this happen and you have no LPA in place the Court of Protection would be asked to appoint a deputy to look after your interests. This situation can be both costly, lengthy and intrusive on your family, It can also mean that your financial accounts including joint accounts are frozen until such person has obtained authority to act for you.
There are two types of LPA available:
1. LPA for Property and Financial Affairs which covers issues such as paying bills, selling your property and dealing with your bank account and other financial interests you may have.
2. LPA for Health and Welfare which covers issues such as where you should live, medical care, dietary decisions
and social activities.
and social activities.
What will it cost?
The fee for a single LPA will be £150 and for a double LPA for example a married couple or partners living together the fee will be £250 for the two LPA’s. A reduced fee is payable when both Property and Financial Affairs and Health and Welfare are completed at the same time. In addition to my fee the Office of the Public Guardian currently charge £82 for each document for registration subject to some low income reduced application fees payable and the LPA must be registered prior to use.
